What is the most common cause of low water pressure at home?

In a normal house, the most common reason for low water pressure is partial blockage in pipes, taps or filters, not some huge mystery in the underground line. Over time, minerals from hard water, rust, sand or tiny debris collect in aerators (the small mesh at the tip of your tap), shower heads and sometimes inside older pipes. Flow gets choked little by little, so you don’t even notice until someday it feels really weak.

Another simple reason is valves not being fully open. Someone does repair work, half-closes a valve, and forgets to turn it all the way back on. It’s a very human mistake. In multi-storey buildings, pressure can also drop at higher floors during peak use times when everyone is showering or running washing machines.

First thing to try yourself: remove and clean the aerator, check the shower head for scale, and make sure the main and bathroom valves are fully open. If only one tap is weak, it’s usually local clogging. If the entire house has low pressure, then it could be a supply issue or a deeper plumbing problem – that’s when calling a plumber makes sense.
