How often should a water heater be serviced?

A good thumb rule is to have your water heater checked once every year, especially before the season when you’ll use it the most. For storage geysers, that annual check can include flushing the tank to remove sediment, checking the anode rod (in hard water areas it wears out faster), inspecting electrical connections and making sure the thermostat and safety valve are working properly.

Instant heaters also benefit from a yearly look, mainly for scale build-up and electrical safety. In places with very hard water, some people end up needing attention more often, because minerals build up inside and reduce efficiency or even block flow.

Most of us ignore heaters until they start making strange noises, give inconsistent hot water, or trip the breaker. By then, they’re already struggling. An annual service is not just about convenience; it reduces the chance of leaks, unexpected breakdowns, and in extreme cases, safety risks. Like any appliance that works with both electricity and water, giving it a little scheduled care is a smart move.
