How long should you wait between coats of interior paint?

For most water-based interior wall paints, waiting around 2–4 hours between coats is usually recommended, depending on the product and room conditions. Warmer, drier rooms speed up drying; cooler or more humid rooms slow it down.

Even if the wall feels dry to the touch sooner, giving it that extra time lets the first coat set properly. If you rush and apply a second coat too fast, you can end up dragging the first layer, causing streaks or uneven coverage.

Always check the instructions on the paint can; manufacturers test their products and suggest a safe window. If you’re unsure, err on the side of slightly longer gaps, especially in cooler, damp weather. A little patience between coats often shows up in smoother, more professional-looking walls.
