What is the correct height to hang wall art above a sofa?

A common guideline is to hang the center of the artwork roughly at eye level, which is usually around 57–60 inches from the floor. Above a sofa, that often translates to leaving about 6–8 inches of space between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame or painting.

Art hung too high floats awkwardly, disconnected from the furniture. Too low and people might lean into it when sitting. The goal is to make the art feel visually connected to the sofa, almost like they belong together as one composition.

If you’re doing a gallery wall with several pieces, treat the whole arrangement as one big shape and apply the same basic idea – center at about eye level, and not too far above the back of the sofa. Stand back and see if the grouping “talks” to the furniture below it.
