How often should gutters be cleaned in a normal home?

If your home has gutters and you get a proper rainy season, a good rule is to clean them at least twice a year – once before the main rains and once after. In areas with many trees, where leaves and twigs constantly fall on the roof, you may need to check them more often, maybe every 3–4 months.

Clogged gutters don’t just overflow in an ugly way. The water they hold can seep back under roof edges, soak walls, and cause damp patches inside the house. Over time, this leads to peeling paint, mould, and even structural damage in extreme cases. Standing water also attracts insects.

Cleaning isn’t complicated: remove leaves, mud and debris, check that downspouts aren’t blocked, and make sure water is actually flowing away from the house. You can do it yourself with a ladder if it’s safe, or hire someone once or twice a year. A couple of hours of work can save you from expensive repairs later.
