How often should interior walls be repainted in a lived-in home?

In a normal family home, repainting every 5–7 years is common for most rooms. High-use spaces like hallways, kids’ rooms and living rooms sometimes need attention sooner, especially if walls get scuffed, drawn on, or bumped often. Bedrooms and rarely used guest rooms can stretch longer if the paint quality was good to begin with.

Bathrooms and kitchens might need repainting more frequently in areas where moisture and grease are a problem, unless you used specially formulated, washable paints. If you start seeing peeling, bubbling, or heavy staining that doesn’t wash off, the wall is asking for a fresh start.

Sometimes you don’t need to repaint the entire house. Touching up one or two tired rooms can freshen things up. But if everything starts looking dull, patchy or yellowed, doing a full repaint gives the whole home a lift and is easier to manage than constant piecemeal fixes.
